Eco-labels and Product Environmental Declaration
Besides system certifications, product certifications are becoming more and more important all over Europe. These are known as the environmental labels, among which the European Ecolabel and the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
The European ecolabel, based on the EC Regulation no. 1980/2000, is a mark designed to promote products and services that have a lower environmental impact during their entire life cycle, thus contributing to an efficient use of resources and to a high level of environment protection. It is a voluntary and selective tool of environmental policy, established in the 5th action programme of the European Union, based on the assessment of the ecological and performance qualities of the products’ entire life cycle. Some of the advantages of a company adopting the ecolabel are:
-
A high visibility on the market by selling products recognised and advertised on the whole European territory;
-
The possibility to stand out from the competitors with products environmentally sustainable;
-
Ability to attract those consumers who take care of environmental issues.
The EPD, based on the Technical Report ISO/TR 14025, is a document that enables the communication of targets and comparable and credible information on the environmental performance of products and services.
